The Subaru Tribeca will be cancelled in February 2014. The Tribeca, Subaru’s midsize SUV, wasn’t very well loved, but it did serve a purpose as Subaru’s largest SUV. Poor sales gave finally forced Subaru to stop production of the Tribeca.
You’d be forgiven if your reaction to this story is amazement that the Tribeca is still on sale today. The Tribeca has always been an odd car and it’s surprising that it has lasted since 2006. The only explanation that has ever made sense to me for the Tribeca’s survival is that dealers complained that when an SUV customer came in and found the Forester too small, they had nothing to show that was larger.
Subaru did redesign the Tribeca in 2008, getting rid of the odd grill, but the weird design stigma survived after the grill was gone and Tribeca sales never recovered. Subaru only sold 78,000 Tribeca models from 2006 to 2013, while the Forester sold 84,372 in 2013 alone, according to Autoblog.
Subaru says that it will “return to the mid-size SUV segment with a three-row vehicle in the future."
