The 2013 Ram 1500 will get an updated V6 engine from Chrysler’s Pentastar family. Ram is also upgrading the 2013 1500 with an eight speed automatic transmission. In addition to the obvious improvements in power and towing, the new powertrain will most likely give the 2013 Ram 1500 much better fuel economy.
According to Left Lane News, the 2013 Ram 1500’s powertrain upgrades were discovered by Automotive News in Chrysler’s annual filling.
The Chrysler Pentastar V6 is currently available in several different cars and SUVs in the Dodge and Chrysler brands. Lest you think the Pentastar six is built for pampered use and won’t hold up to the rigors of truck duty (if you’ve ever shopped for a truck, you probably know that V6-powered full sized trucks take the worst abuse) the 2012 Jeep Wrangler is powered by a 285-hp version of the engine. Expect the Ram 1500 to get at least that much, which will make it a huge upgrade over the 215-hp 3.7-liter V6 engine available this year.
In addition to the 285-hp Pentastar, there is a 305-hp version of the engine. That would put Ram 1500’s V6 engine ahead of the top-of-the-line V8s from just a few years ago.
